It’s important to know which verb tense to use during an IELTS speaking test. The verb tense SIMPLE PAST and PRESENT PERFECT both talk about actions done in the past.
THE SIMPLE PAST TENSE
Use the simple past tense for actions done in the past with no connections to the present. “I drank coffee this morning”–this is something that has already happened and it has no connection with the present.
THE PRESENT PERFECT
If, however, the action happened in the past but it has some kind of impact on the present, or if it continues into the present the verb tense PRESENT PERFECT is used. In the sentence, “I haven’t seen that movie yet so I don’t know what you’re talking about”– the present perfect is used because the action has an impact on the present, the speaker doesn’t know what is being talked about.
“I have been studying English for 2 months”.
The present perfect is used in this sentence because the action started in the past but continues to be done in the present. This means the speaker is still studying English.
WHY IS THIS USEFUL FOR IELTS?
You will be talking about situations that happened in the past when you take the IELTS speaking test. These events can either be about yourself or about other matters. The rule is to determine if these actions are still relevant in the present, or whether they still have an impact or not. Practice that rule by writing the sentences down so that you will have more time to determine the relevance of each action to the present.
