If you’ve noticed from your teachers, they always have a follow-up question to your answer. That question is WHY. However hard it is to answer this question, it is important that you get in the habit of answering it. In an IELTS exam, the examiner will respond to short and simple answers by asking you, “why?”.

This simply means that you need to say more than just one or two-worded answers so the examiner can accurately evaluate your language. Be careful! If the examiner constantly asks you the question why, you could lose points for lack of fluency. In order to achieve a Band 6, you must be willing to speak at length. In other words, you must be able to explain your answer without the need of the examiner to ask you “why?”

So keep practicing and don’t get nervous if the examiner asks you “why” a few times– they just want you to keep talking.
