Bored과 Boring의 차이점을 알아보기 전에 한 가지 질문을 드리고자 합니다.
1.”나 심심해”를 영어로 하면?
“I’m bored.” 일까요? “I’m boring.” 일까요?
정답은 “I’m bored.”
・I’m bored. 나 심심해.
・I’m boring. 나는 지루한 사람이다.
2. 왜 “I’m boring”이 아닌 걸까? – Bored와 Boring의 어간(語幹) 「Bore」의 의미를 알자!
Bored와 Boring의 차이점을 알려면, 두 단어의 어간(語幹)인 「Bore」의 뜻을 알시면 이해하기 쉬우실 거예요!
Bore는 목적어를 필요로 하는 타동사로 아래의 의미를 가지고 있습니다.
지루하게[따분하게] 만들다
「Bore」라는 타동사에 “- ed(과거분사)”와 “-ing(현재분사)”를 붙여 bored와 boring라는 분사형 형용사가 되는데요.
・bored는 수동의 의미를 가진 형용사(주어가 어떤 일을 당하는)
・boring는 능동의 의미를 가진 형용사(주어가 어떤 일을 스스로 ~하는)
가 됩니다.
그렇기 때문에, I’m bored는 어간이 가지고 있던 “「Bore」의 의미 + 수동”으로
나는 지루하게 만듦을 당하다(= 지루하다/ 심심하다)
라는 의미가 됩니다.
I’m boring는 어간이 가지고 있던 “「Bore」의 의미 + 능동”으로
나는 지루하게 만든다(= 나는 지루한 사람)
라는 의미가 되어버립니다.
3.그래서 Bored와 Boring의 차이는?
Bored : 사람들이 사물, 사람을 어떻게 느끼는지 「감정」을 묘사하는 형용사. 대부분 “사람”이 주어.
(주어가 무엇인가에 의해서 지루함을 느끼게 되는 것이니까) 지루함을 느끼게 된, 지루해 하는라는 의미.
Boring: 주어가 감정・상태를 만드는 요인으로, 「성질」을 묘사한 형용사. 대부분 “사물・상황”이 주어.
(주어가 지루하게 만드는 요인이 되는 것이니까) 지루하게 하는, 재미 없는라는 의미.
4. Bored와 Boring의 예문과 대화문으로 차이점을 느껴보자!
Bored 대화문
[상황] Renata asked Jerome the reason why he’s leaving town sooner than expected.
Renata: Jerome , I thought you will stay in this town for 3 more years. Why did you suddenly change your plan?
Jerome: Renata- I can’t stay long anymore. It’s hard to live here. I have been bored doing the same things everyday.
Renata: What particular things bore you?
Jerome: I have been bored going to the same cafes and parks.This town is too small for me that I can’t even meet new people.
Renata: I feel you. Sometimes I get bored too, but I don’t have the means to move somewhere soon just like you.
Jerome: Somehow , the first few months weren’t a drag at all . Thanks to you Renata . Save up and leave someday.
Boring 대화문
[상황] Ed thinks that the concert is boring as his favorite band played same songs from last year.
Ed: I regret buying the VIP ticket to watch Smashing Pumpkins on their final concert tour.
Beka: I have the same sentiment!
Ed: It was boring! The set of songs played were same as that of last year. The people behind me were booing them!
Beka: The final concert should have been a great one if the director were creative and a devoted fan just like us!
