“말하다”를 영어로 뭐라고 할까요?
Say / Tell / Speak / Talk 중 한 단어를 떠올리셨을 거라 생각합니다.
각 단어가 내포하고 있는 의미가 다르다는 것을 아시나요?
오늘은 각 단어가 어떻게 쓰이는지 알아보고자 합니다.
Say
: 화자의 발언 내용에 중점을 둠. 동사 뒤, 목적어로 발언 내용이 나옴.
상황 1: On her last day in the Philippines , Jenny wants to express her appreciation to her mentor who never gave up on coaching her to become the next company speaker.
Jenny: Sir Mike! This is my last day in the Philippines.
Sir Mike: Our seminar went by so fast!
Jenny: I just want to say, you are the best coach in Southeast Asia. I think I will be confident enough to present about our company in our Texas Convention.
Sir Mike: The convention will be very hectic. With your patience and competitive skills, our company will outshine the others. I just want to say thank you and good luck!
+ [추가 정보]신문, 표지판, 설명서 등이 주어 일 때, “~에 의하면 ~라고 한다” 혹은 “~라고 쓰여있다”라고 해석해 주시면 됩니다.
(예) The sign says “Keep out”. 그 표지판에는 “출입 금지”라고 쓰여있다.
Tell
: 상대방에게의 내용 전달에 초점을 둠.
+상대방에게 “~을 알려주다”라는 의미도 가지고 있음.
(ex) Could you tell me the way to the museum? 박물관 가는 길을 알려주시겠어요?
상황 2: The tour guide informs Jack about the itinerary
Jack: How many days shall we be travelling?
Tour guide: We will be traveling around Russia for 7 days. We will stay in Moscow for 3 days and 4 days in St. Petersburg.
Jack: Could you tell me what specific places we will visit?
Tour guide: I will take you first around streets of Moscow to see St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Kremlin Moscow Castle. When we go to St. Petersburg,we will visit some universities and check out the performances of the students. They are gifted with musical and theatrical performance skills. Since it’s winter, we will also go skiing before coming back to the capital city.
Jack: Oh! I will tell this to my wife. This is just incredible. 🙂
[참고]Say와 Tell의 차이점은
-Say 뒤에는 “발언 내용” 한 가지의 요소
-Tell 뒤에는 “~(사람)에게”, “~(내용)을”라는 두 가지의 요소가 옴.
「Tell + 사람 + 내용」
「Tell + 내용 + to 사람」
「Tell + 사람 + about 내용」
*Say의 경우, 누구에게 말하는지 언급하지 않아도 되나, 만약 언급할 경우, 사람을 목적어로 취할 수 없기 때문에 “to (전치사)”와 함께 사용해야 합니다.
(예) He said to her, “Thank you”. 그는 그녀에게 “고맙다”라고 말했다. (그가 말한 내용, 즉 고맙다는 내용이 중요함)
Speak
: “말하다(음성을 내다)”라는 행위에 초점을 둠
화자의 발언 내용에는 중점 X.
(예) She speaks Spanish. 그녀는 스페인어로 말한다.
-> 발언 내용에는 중점을 두지 않고 있으며, 이 문장에서 중요한 것은, “스페인어”라는 소리를 그녀가 내고 있다는 것입니다.
상황 3: James wants to speak to his professor after getting an F Grade
James: Good evening Sir! May I speak with you for a brief moment?
Professor: Yes , sure Mr. lee. What is it about?
James: This is about my grade. What were my shortcomings?
Professor: Mr .Lee, I think you need to restructure your academic writing direction. This is the fundamental part of your thesis. You may want to check my comments on all your academic paper. I think you need to refresh your writing direction for next semester.
James: Thanks for explaining it to me. I appreciate your objective comment Sir.
+ [추가정보] 일방적이고 공적인(예: 연설) 소통의 경우도 Speak 를 사용합니다.
(예) She spoke in front of everyone. 그녀는 모두의 앞에서 발표했다.
Talk
: 화자와 상대방이 “대화를 나누는 것”에 초점을 둠.
+ “~(사람)과 이야기하다”라고 말하고 싶을 경우, “talk to~/talk with~”과 같이 “to/with”를 사용
+ “~(내용/주제)에 대해 말하다”라고 말하고 싶을 경우, “about(전치사)”를 사용
상황 4: Olli and Sandra are discussing about their plan for the next batch of language trainees
Olli: Can we talk ?
Sandra: Yes! We are talking now …
Olli: How did your day go?
Sandy: Same old, it’s neutral. Not really bad!
Olli: Well,I think you would want to talk about our work plans specifically for the next batch students.
Sandra: Yes. I think we have to make more challenging quizzes. I’m wondering why most of our students are getting a perfect score. It seems like our training materials are becoming too easy for them.
Olli: We need to update them!
[참고]Speak와 Talk의 차이점은
-Speak는 단방향 소통, 공식적(formal), 특정한 목표를 달성하기 위해 또는 누구에게 무엇을 하라고 하기 위해 말을 하는 것.
-Talk는 쌍방향 소통, 캐쥬얼(casual), 친교 행위로나 남의 조언을 구하기 위해 말을 하는 것.
